The Cooler and Warmer Side of Beards

The Cooler and Warmer Side of Beards

It goes without saying that most of us grow beards for aesthetic reasons, as many of us find that rocking facial hair gives us a more masculine appearance.   But, biologically speaking, beards serve a purpose that has nothing to do with improving our physical appearance.  The hair that grows on the face actually exists to help us withstand the unpredictable temperatures outdoors.

However, as you’ll see, our beards serve a more important purpose than we may realize.

Your Beard and the Temperature

Despite the fact that many of us spend a lot of time each day maintaining our beards with the best products and the right grooming tools, we rarely ask ourselves why beards exist in the first place.  Well, the reality is that beards are capable of regulating the temperature of our face, which is one of the few areas of the body that is completely exposed when we are outdoors. Allow us to explain.

Cool in the Summer

Have you ever noticed that even on the hottest days, your beard manages to keep your face feeling cool?  This is because your beard is capable of trapping condensation when the temperatures are high, which helps cool down your face.  Further, your beard acts as a shady spot that protects your skin from the heat that comes from direct sunlight exposure.

Warm in the Winter

Not only does your beard have the ability to cool down your face during the hot summer months, but it can also ensure that your face feels nice and warm when the temperature outdoors is frigid.  Fascinatingly, when the follicles sense cold temperatures, they respond by making the facial hair stand straight up. This helps trap body heat that comes off of the skin so that it is returned back to the face.  Besides that, a beard helps guard your face against harsh, chilly winds during the cold months.

Hot or Cold, Yes or No Beard!

If you’re looking for an easy way to maintain a comfortable temperature, at least on your face, growing a beard is the way to go.  Since the dawn of humanity, our beards have managed to keep us warm or cool, depending on the time of year. So, now you have yet another reason to grow and take care of your facial hair.
